Uncut

Uncut's contents include lengthy features on old albums, interviews with film directors, music and film news, and reviews of all major new album, film and DVD releases. Its music features tend to focus on genres such as Americana, rock and alternative country. Each month the magazine includes a free CD, which may include both new and older music. Special Issues have covered Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Byrds, David Bowie, Demon Records, Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Martin Scorsese, Motown Records, Morrissey, and more. Uncut underwent a radical redesign in May 2006, as a result of which the magazine no longer catered for books and reduced its film content. Allan Jones has been the editor of Uncut since the magazine launched. A former editor of Melody Maker, he has stamped his own identity on the magazine and writes a regular monthly column, recounting stories from his long career in music journalism.

Mojo

Mojo is a popular music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom. Following the success of the magazine Q, publishers EMAP were looking for a title which would cater for the burgeoning interest in classic rock music. Mojo was first published on 15 October 1993 and in keeping with its aesthetic had Bob Dylan and John Lennon as its first cover stars. Noted for its in-depth coverage of both popular and cult acts it acted as the inspiration for Blender and Uncut. Many noted music critics have written for it including Charles Shaar Murray, Greil Marcus, Nick Kent and Jon Savage. The launch editor of Mojo was Paul Du Noyer and his successors have included Mat Snow, Paul Trynka and Pat Gilbert. Often criticised for its frequent coverage of classic rock acts such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan it has nevertheless featured many newer and "left-field" acts. It was the first mainstream magazine in the UK to focus on The White Stripes, whom it has covered as zealously as many older acts. Mojo regularly includes a covermount CD which ties in with a current magazine article or theme. In 2004 it introduced the Mojo Honours list, an awards ceremony which is a mixture of readers' and critics' awards.

GQ

GQ (originally Gentlemen's Quarterly) is a monthly men's magazine focusing upon fashion, style, and culture for men, through articles on food, movies, fitness, sex, music, travel, sports, technology, and books. It is generally perceived as upscale and more sophisticated than lad mags, such as Maxim or FHM. "Gentlemen's Quarterly was launched in 1957 in the United States as Apparel Arts, a fashion quarterly for men which was published for many years in association with Esquire.[1] Apparel was dropped from the logo in 1958 with the spring issue after nine issues. In 1983 Conde Nast Publications took over the publication and editor Art Cooper changed the course of the magazine, introducing articles beyond fashion and establishing GQ as a general men's magazine in competition with Esquire. Subsequently, international editions have were launched as regional adaptations of the U.S. editorial formula. Jim Nelson was named editor-in-chief of GQ in February 2003; during his tenure he worked as both a writer and an editor of several National Magazine Award-nominated pieces.[citation needed]. During Nelson's tenure, GQ has become more oriented towards younger readers and those who prefer a more casual style.

Q

The magazine has an extensive review section, featuring: new releases (music), reissues (music), music compilations, film and live concert reviews as well as radio and television reviews. It uses a star rating system from one to five stars, indeed the rating an album receives in Q is often added to print and television advertising for the album in the UK and Ireland. It also compiles a list of approximately eight albums, which it classes as the best new releases of the last three months. Much of the magazine is devoted to interviews with popular or new musical artists. The magazine is well known for compiling lists; it has made lists ranging from "The 100 Greatest albums" to the "100 Greatest '100 Greatest' Lists". The most famous of these is the classic "50 bands to see before you die". Every other month Q and its sister magazine Mojo have a special edition magazine — these magazines have been about musical times, genres, or very important musicians. Often promotional gifts are given away with the magazine, such as cover-mounted CDs or books. The January 2006 issue included a free copy of "The Greatest Rock and Pop Miscellany … Ever!", modelled on Schott's Original Miscellany. Every issue of Q has a different message on the spine. Readers then work out what the message has to do with the contents of the magazine. This practice — known as the "spine line" — has since become commonplace among British lifestyle magazines, including Q's movie-centric sister magazine Empire, and the football monthly FourFourTwo. Usual features include The Q50, wherein the magazine lists the top 50 essential tracks of the month; Cash for Questions, in which a famous celeb answers question sent in by readers, who win £25 if their question is printed; Ten Commandments, where a particular singer create their very own ten commandments by which to live; and Rewind, in which the magazine takes us back in time through the history of music through archive issues of Q. On March 4, 2007, "Q" named Elvis Presley the greatest singer of all time.
